Men’s Golf Fifth at Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament

BATTLE CREEK - Calvin used a strong day performance to finish in fifth place at the Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament. Calvin came up with a second day score of 303 after recording a score of 312 the day before. The weekend tournament was held at the Bedford Valley Country Club. Calvin’s two-day total of 615 strokes was one stroke better than sixth place Hope and none stroke behind fourth place Madonna. Host Olivet took first place with a two-day total of 605 strokes while Trine and Wheaton (IL) tied for second at 609.
Sophomore Dave Sarkipato (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) had a strong second day peformance, firing a round of 73 that allowed him to finish in a tie for 17th place (80-73-153) overall. Senior Eric Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) also had a two-day total of 153 strokes including a round of 76 on Saturday. Senior Jess Hendriksma (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 75 on Saturday to finish in 21st place overall (79-75-154) while sophomore Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was tied for 22nd with a tournament total of 155 (76-79). Junior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) rounded out Calvin’s finishers at 161 (80-81).
Calvin’s reserve team finished in 11th place at 631, firing a second day team score of 313. Freshman David Veen (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 156 (78-78), freshman Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had a 158 (83-75), freshman Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) a 160 (79-81), freshman Kory Kiefer (Howell/Detroit Catholic Central HS) a 161 (82-79) and sophomore Mike Fennema (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) a 164 (79-85).
Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA campaign on September 9 when it returns to Bedford Valley to compete at an MIAA jamboree hosted by Olivet.
