MARSHALL - The Calvin men’s golf team claimed the first MIAA title of the 2012-13 academic year, placing third at the eighth and final MIAA Jamboree of the year Tuesday afternoon at the Medalist Golf Club with a team score of 324 strokes. Calvin finished five strokes behind second place Hope and 12 strokes behind first place Adrian but finished 10 strokes ahead of Hope in the final MIAA overall standings. Calvin held a 15-stroke lead heading into Tuesday’s competition and did what it took to hold on for the win.

The league title is Calvin’s second in the last three years in men’s golf.

Calvin will now host two of the three 18-hole rounds that make up the 54-hole MIAA Spring Tournament next spring. The spring tournament determines the league’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament in May. Calvin will be one of four teams teams competing in the tournament along with Hope, Trine and Adrian.

“We are thrilled to finish as (regular season) league champion,” said Calvin men’s golf coach Brian Bolt. “Playing out in front as the league leader creates pressure but our guys fought through and turned in the scores to get the job done. The conditions today were not easy. The wind was very brisk and the pin placements were difficult.”

In Tuesday’s round, Calvin was led by junior Jake Hoogstrate with a 79 while senior Ben Kuiper had an 80, sophomore James VanNoord had an 81, senior Dave Sarkipato an 84 and junior Ross Ryzenga a 93.
Kuiper was named to the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year while Sarkipato landed a spot on the All-MIAA second team. Kuiper finished fourth in the final MIAA individual standings while Sarkipato finished seventh.

“Winning the regular season championship sets us up well for the spring,” said Bolt. “We will play two of the three tournament rounds on our home course and we are looking forward to the opportunity to do so. We know winning the tournament will be challenging but we’re in the tournament and we’ll be eagerly awaiting the spring season.”
