Men’s Golf Captures Sunshine Invitational Title

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL - The Calvin men’s golf team captured first place at the two-day, 36-hole Sunshine Invitational on Friday. After opening with an 18-hole round team score of 311 at the Wannamaker Golf Course on Thursday, Calvin came back with a score of 298 on Friday at the Ryder Golf Course to finish with a final total of 609 strokes.
Williams was second at 626 with Trinity of Connecticut third at 631.
Freshman Michael Wierenga (Caledonia, South Christian HS) had a big day on Friday with a round of 73 to lead the Knights. Freshman James VanNoord (Troy/Troy Athens HS) was close behind with a 74 while sophomore Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had another strong outing with a score of 75. Freshman Jon Cook (Muskegon/Western Michigan Christian HS) also posted a score of 75 while sophomore Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) had an 80 and junior Ben Kuiper (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) an 81.
Competing as individuals for Calvin were senior Brian Haverdink (Holland/Holland Christian HS) with a 75, senior Jake DeBoer (Byron Center/South Christian HS) with a 78, sophomore Jake Hoogstrate (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 79 and sophomore Kory Kiefer (Howell/Detroit Catholic Central HS) with an 80.
Ryzenga finished in second place in the final tournament standings with a two-day total of 151 strokes (75-76) and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Cook finished tied for third with a total of 154 strokes (79-75) and also earned a spot on the all-tournament team. Wierenga finished tied for sixth at 155 (82-73) while Kuiper (76-81) and Haverdink (82-75) were tied for eighth at 157.
Calvin is back in action on April 10 when it competes at the Vic Cuiss Invitational in Jackson.
