Men’s Basketball Gets Back on Winning Track With 86-59 Victory Over Trinity Christian College

Calvin gained a much-needed boost of momentum with an 86-59 victory over visiting Trinity Christian College Friday night at Van Noord Arena. The victory snapped a two-game losing skid and boosted Calvin’s season record to 3-5 heading into a 10-day break before the Knights face Lewis and Clark (OR) in a tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 28.
Calvin used a 10-2 run late in the first half to build a 32-23 lead before settling on a 38-32 halftime advantage.
In the second half, Calvin broke free from the Trolls (4-9) with a 16-6 run in the opening five-and-a-half minutes fueled by a pair of triples by senior Matt Veltema, triples by junior Danny Rodts and freshman Tom Snikkers and a fast-break dunk by senior John Mantel.
Trinity Christian came back to cut the deficit to nine points at 54-45 but the Knights proceeded to go on a 19-2 run over the next five minutes to build a commanding 73-47 lead.
Veltema led all scorers with 20 points, connecting on 6-of-9 attempts from three-point range. Snikkers also had an outstanding game with a career-high 18 points to go with five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Mantel added his ninth collegiate double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and a season-high five assists. Junior Brad Schnyders also had 10 points off the bench while senior Paul Campbell chipped in with six points, a career-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
Calvin finished the game with a season-high 23 assists and connected on a season-high 11 three-pointers on 25 attempts for a 44.0 percent three-point clip. Calvin held a 48-25 rebounding advantage and limited Trinity Christian to 38.3 percent field goal shooting.
Trinity Christian was led in scoring by Will Bruinsma with 18 points while Jamie King had 16.
Friday’s game marked the 14th meeting between Calvin and Trinity Christian College in a series Calvin leads 12-2.
