ALMA - Calvin put together its second straight win with a 85-77 road victory at Alma College Saturday afternoon, improving the Knights overall record to 7-8 and their league record to 2-2.
A highly contested first half saw its biggest lead after a pair of Daniel Stout free throws stretched Calvin’s edge to five (32-27) with 4:17 remaining. The Knights took a 39-35 advantage into the break. Bryan Powell provided a spark off the bench with 13 points in the first half.
Alma (4-11 overall, 0-4 MIAA) tried its best to keep the game close, but the Knights ended up having too many weapons. With 12:12 left, a strong three point play by Tyler Kruis put the Knights up by 14, which was their largest lead of the game. A few minutes later (at 9:45) a driving Tommy Erickson layup trimmed the lead to six. The Knights showed great composure however and responded with seven straight points to put the game away.
Junior forward Tom Snikkers led the Knights with 25 points and 11 rebounds while fellow junior Bryan Powell had a career-high 24 points of his own. Snikkers scored 16 of his 25 in the second half and hit numerous big shots down the stretch to shut the door on the Scots. Powell’s 24 marked his career high so far in a Calvin uniform. Senior Brian Haverdink also matched a career-scoring high with 13 points, connecting on 8-of-8 at the free throw line. Kruis also had eight points and seven rebounds for Calvin.
Calvin finished the game with a 48-38 rebounding advantage. The Knights shot 41.2 percent overall and converted 27 of 37 (.730) from the free throw line.
Alma was led by sophomore guard Brandon Krause with 23 points while Greg Silverthorn had 16. The Scots shot 42.9 percent overall including 48.0 percent in the second half.
Calvin will travel to Hope College on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at DeVos Arena for the first meeting of The Rivalry this season.
