Men’s Basketball Defeated by Albion 64-59

The Knights fell to 0-2 in conference with a 64-59 loss against Albion on Saturday.
In the gameís opening seven minutes, Albion went on a 13-4 run with a flurry of three point plays. Alex Harville knocked down two triples and Luke Walker added one to cap off the run.
The Britons maintained a lead for most of the first half until Calvin chipped away at the deficit. Freshman Ryan Nadeau and senior Brian Haverdink hit threeís and junior Matt DeBoer knocked down a pair of jumpers to cut the Britonsí lead to three. After lay-ups from sophomore Tyler Kruis and junior Tom Snikkers, the Knights had a brief lead before Albionís Leonard Wernette-Leff beat the buzzer with a put-back to put Albion on top by one entering halftime.
The second half was neck-and-neck from there. Kolin Kazen and Lawrence Ridgell made threes for the Britons but DeBoer responded with one for the Knights and Calvin soon had a three-point advantage. With ten minutes remaining, Albionís Zach Hurth drilled a baseline to tie the game at 42. Dave Rietema then responded with two acrobatic lay-ups to but Calvin back on top.
But with two minutes remaining, Calvin found itself trailing by three. Haverdink answered with an equalizing three. Mike Smith countered with a lay-up and the Knights once again trailed by two. But Albion fouled Haverdink, who once again tied the game with two free throws. The Britons regained possession with seventeen seconds and with two seconds remaining Luke Walker hit a clutch baseline three to put Albion on top. Calvin was unable to inbound the ball in response and Albion hit free throws to clinch the 64-59 final score.
Calvin was led in defeat by DeBoer with 15 points while Snikkers had 14 points, 7 assists and six rebounds. Kruis added 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Calvin hosts Kalamazoo Wednesday at 8 p.m.
