ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin men’s tennis team finished its spring break trip with a 9-0 victory against Knox College (IL) on Thurs., Mar. 21 and a 5-4 loss to Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Fri., Mar. 22.

In the matchup with the Prairie Fire of Knox, Calvin won all three doubles flights, surrendering five or less games in each flight.  Seniors Preston Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) defeated Karl Ruzgas and Walter Palmer 8-5 at first doubles.  Senior Brian DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) and junior Loukas Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated Jonathan Ng and David Ham 8-5 at second doubles.

The third doubles flight did not provide any drama.  Senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) defeated Dustin Loch and Mike Carr 8-1.

Calvin needed to split the six singles flights to win the match.  The Knights did that and more, sweeping all six.

Phillips at second singles, Peterson at fourth singles, Brower at fifth singles and sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) all won in straight sets without yielding more than two games in any set.

DeMaagd needed three sets to pull of a 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 victory over Ruzgas at first singles.  Reinken defeated Ng 6-4, 6-1 at third singles.
