OLIVET - Calvin and Olivet met on October 2nd at Zuidema Field in Grand Rapids.  That physical match resulted in a 0-0 double overtime tie, but a handful of missed opportunities had the Knights feeling like they had lost.  That result, Calvin’s third conference tie, held Calvin to 18 points.  Hope stood alone atop the conference table with 21 points.

That made Wednesday’s game a must win for the Knights.  At Olivet’s Cutler Athletic complex, Calvin seemed destined for the same fate.  With less than five minutes remaining, the Knights and Comets were tied 0-0 in another hard-fought game.  Despite uncontested headers in front of the net and dangerous volley opportunities, Calvin was scoreless, tied, and expecting overtime.

Then with 2:30 minutes remaining, attempting to clear, Olivet was called for a foul just outside the box.  Calvin was 20 yards away from a game-winner.  Standing in the way was a five man wall and one of the MIAA’s best goalkeepers.

Dan Kmetz, Joe Broekhuizen, and Scott Hooker stood over the ball for Calvin.  Broekhuizen put the ball in motion for Hooker, who buried a ball into the top shelf, through the wall and past the hands of Ethan Felsing.

“Scottie put it on a rope.  I saw the ball was hit and then I saw the back of the net move,” said Coach Chris Hughes of the shot.

“I just wanted to hit it hard and put it on goal,” said Hooker.  “I was planning on overtime, but now we’re still alive in the conference run.”

After Hooker’s strike, Calvin possessed the ball in iced the final two minutes, withstanding Olivet’s last attempts to equalize.

The 1-0 victory put Calvin tied atop the MIAA at 21 points with rival Hope.  It also marked the second consecutive clean sheet for goalkeeper Ryan Bratt, who made three saves on the day.  Calvin outshot the Comets 20-7.

“We are going to take the three points and run,” concluded Hughes.  He continued, “Olivet is always challenging, but we found opportunities through our set pieces.  We played smart today.”
