ST. LOUIS, MO - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon on the campus of Washington University. After a scoreless first half, Calvin turned the tempo up a notch in the second half, outshooting the Bluegolds 11-3. Calvin’s offensive surge finally paid off in the 77th minute of play when sophomore Francesa Smith (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington South HS) received a crafty heel flick pass from senior Elaine Schnabel (Chesterton, IN/Chesterton HS) and deposited a shot into a wide-open net.
Calvin then kept Wisconsin-Eau Claire without a shot over the final 13 minutes of play to gain the shutout win.
Calvin (2-1-0) held a 13-7 shots at goal advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron Northern HS) had three saves for Calvin to post her second collegiate shutout.
Calvin’s defensive backline also came up with a key save in the first half as a Wisconsin-Eau Claire shot was cleared off the backline. The Bluegolds also hit the crossbar with a shot in the final two minutes of the first half.
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it journeys to Madonna for a non-conference game in Livonia at 4 p.m.
