KALAMAZOO – The Calvin men’s soccer team traveled to Kalamazoo looking for its fourth consecutive conference win. In a match up of the two teams tied for first place, the Knights blanked the Hornets 5-0 on Saturday afternoon. Calvin improves to 6-3, 4-1 in conference play.
Both teams were deadlocked at zero for the first 40 minutes. Senior Joe Broekhuizen scored two goals in as many minutes to give Calvin a 2-0 lead going into the break.
Kalamazoo nearly got on the board ten minutes into the second half. Jared Georgakopoulos ripped a shot that got by Calvin keeper Jared Rushlau. Luckily for the Knights, the ball found the crossbar.
Ten minutes later, junior Zach Willis found the net for the Knights, putting them up 3-0. In the 83rd minutes, a pair of substitutes scored a minute apart. Senior Mike Sanderson and freshmen Sam Hanover scored their first goals of the season.
The Knights outshot the Hornets 17-13. Calvin senior Jared Rushlau was credited with the shutout.
I thought we played really well top to bottom today,” Calvin head coach Ryan Souders said. “It was a dog fight for the first 60 minutes, and then we were able to break through because we were staying in our system and remained composed.”
Calvin returns to action Tuesday when it hosts the Bulldogs of Adrian College. The game is scheduled for 4pm at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
