Tuesday, May 03, 2011
Calvin College women’s basketball coach John Ross has been named the Women’s College Coach of the Year by the (BCAM) Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. It marks the second time that Ross has been so honored as he also received the award in 2007. The award honors a women’s basketball coach at a four-year institution in the state of Michigan and includes schools at the NCAA I, II and III levels as well as at the NAIA level. Ross is one of four Michigan collegiate coaches to be honored by BCAM as Gary Bailey of Grace Bible College is the Men’s College Coach of the Year while Jason Cooper of Lake Michigan Community College is the Women’s Junior College Coach of the Year and Dick Shilts of Kalamazoo Valley Community College the Men’s Junior College Coach of the Year.
Ross hails from Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He is a graduate of Manitowoc Lutheran High School and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Ross recently completed his eighth year as women’s basketball coach at Calvin.
This past winter, he led the Calvin women’s basketball team to an overall record of 25-5 and a share of the MIAA regular season title at 15-1 in league play. His Knights also captured their first MIAA Tournament title since 2005, defeating rival Hope 67-65 in the MIAA Tournament Championship game. The MIAA Tournament title gave Calvin its second consecutive berth in the NCAA III Tournament including its fifth under Ross. In the NCAA III Tournament, Calvin defeated LaRoche College in the first round before falling to fifth-ranked University of Chicago in the second round.
Calvin’s 25 victories this year matched the second-highest single-season total in Calvin women’s basketball history. The MIAA regular season title also marked the third for Calvin under Ross in women’s basketball.
The Knights also finished ranked 16th in the final USA Today/ESPN Division III Coaches’ poll and 19th in the final d3hoops.com Top 25 poll of the year.
Under Ross, Calvin has produced six 20-win campaigns including two years where the Knights reached the national quarterfinals (2005 and 2007). In his eight years at Calvin, Ross has recorded a won-loss record of 179-46 for a winning percentage of .796. Heading into the 2010-11 season, Ross was ranked 11th on the active NCAA Division III women’s basketball coaches’ list in terms of winning percentage. Ross is already the all-time leader in Calvin women’s basketball history in coaching victories.
Ross also doubles as the head men’s tennis coach at Calvin. This spring, he led the Calvin men’s tennis team to an overall dual match record of 16-8 including a second place finish in the MIAA.
