John Mantel Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin College center John Mantel its Player of the Week in men’s basketball.
Mantel, a junior from Chelsea (Chelsea HS), had back-to-back double-doubles in leading the Knights to a pair of road victories last week that moved Calvin into sole possession of first place in the MIAA.
He scored 12 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and dished out four assists in 22 minutes in an 87-56 win over Adrian. He then added 17 points, including the go-ahead free throws with a little more than a minute remaining, and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes in leading the Knights to a 66-64 victory over Hope. It’s the second time this season Mantel is being honored as MIAA Player of the Week.
Mantel has amassed four double-doubles this year and is averaging 13.8 points and 7.2 rebounds a game while connecting on 53.1 percent of his field goal attempts and 73.9 percent of his free throw attempts.
Calvin returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Olivet at 7:30 p.m. at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena.
