John Mantel Named MIAA Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin junior center John Mantel has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in men’s basketball.
A native of Chelsea and a graduate of Chelsea High School, Mantel averaged 20.5 points and 6.0 rebounds a game this past weekend at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament. In the consolation game against Cornerstone, Mantel had 27 points and 9 rebounds including a pair of free throws that sent the game into overtime. During the tournament, Mantel was 15-of-28 (.536) from the field, 2-of-5 (.400) from three-point range and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. He was also credited with three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. For his efforts, Mantel was named to the all-tournament team.
Calvin is currently 3-1 overall and returns to action on Friday when it travels to Wheaton to participate in the CCIW/MIAA Classic. Calvin will open the tournament on Friday night with a 9:00 p.m. (EST) game against host Wheaton. On Saturday, Calvin will face Carthage (WI) at 2:00 p.m. (EST). Both games will be played inside Wheaton’s King Arena.
