For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin junior center John Mantel has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in men’s basketball.

A native of Chelsea and a graduate of Chelsea High School, Mantel averaged 20.5 points and 6.0 rebounds a game this past weekend at the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament. In the consolation game against Cornerstone, Mantel had 27 points and 9 rebounds including a pair of free throws that sent the game into overtime. During the tournament, Mantel was 15-of-28 (.536) from the field, 2-of-5 (.400) from three-point range and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. He was also credited with three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. For his efforts, Mantel was named to the all-tournament team.

Calvin is currently 3-1 overall and returns to action on Friday when it travels to Wheaton to participate in the CCIW/MIAA Classic. Calvin will open the tournament on Friday night with a 9:00 p.m. (EST) game against host Wheaton. On Saturday, Calvin will face Carthage (WI) at 2:00 p.m. (EST). Both games will be played inside Wheaton’s King Arena.
