Saturday, November 19, 2011
After a heart-wrenching double overtime loss to Calvin Friday night, Grace Bible came out strong against D’Youville College Saturday afternoon. With the Tigers starting lineup averaging just under 6’4”, Grace Bible held an average two inch advantage over the Spartans.
The Tigers would utilize this advantage all game long, outscoring D’Youville by 34 points in the paint en route to a 100-67 victory.
Grace Bible would jump out to an 18-7 lead just seven minutes into the game. The Tigers would then extend their early lead to 15 on a three-pointer by guard Randy Jefferson. On their next seven scoring possessions, Grace Bible would put the ball down on the block, earning fouls and making layups to build a 40-24 lead with four minutes to go in the first half. Grace Bible would keep the lead and add another point, heading into the locker room with the 49-32 lead.
The Spartans first half woes were largely due to the inability of senior Raysean Johnson to find his shooting stroke as he had done against Willamette the day before, earning the Van Noord Arena scoring record with 36 points. Johnson shot just 2 of 13 in the first half for six points. The Tigers, on the other hand, were red-hot in the first half, shooting 58.8% from the field.
Entering the second half of play, Grace Bible would continue their strong shooting, building up their lead to 67-44 while pushing their percentage to 61.4%.
Putting in their backups, Grace Bible would continue to build their lead up to as much as 37. The game would wind down with the Tigers handily in control, earning the 100-67 victory.
A balanced attack allowed the Tigers to build their lead. They were led on offense by junior Zach Scutte, who had 18 points on 9 of 10 while grabbing eight rebounds. Five other Tigers had double digit points, with John Oostema scoring 11, and Randy Jefferson, Matt Kurtz, Ryan Dame, and Aaron Schutte all scoring 10.
D’Youville was once again lead on offense by Raysean Johnson, who had 13 points. Freshmen Jeff Curry had 12 for the Spartans. Sophomore Deon Williams led D’Youville on the boards with seven rebounds while scoring six points.
Grace Bible moves to 6-3 on the season while D’Youville drops to 0-2.
