Cross Country Teams Run Well at Notre Dame Invitational

NOTRE DAME, IN - The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams posted top-six finishes at the Notre Dame Invitational as the 11th-ranked women’s team took sixth in the women’s 5K Gold Division race with a team score of 170 points while the seventh-ranked men’s team took fourth in the men’s 8K Gold Division race.

In the women’s competition, Calvin was the second-highest finishing Division III school, surpassed only by sixth-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh which placed third with 115 points. Oakland University won the women’s race with 91 points. Junior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had an oustanding day for Calvin, finishing sixth individually with a time of 18:04.  Sophomore Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was Calvin’s next finisher, placing 36th (18:46) followed by senior Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 39th (18:49), senior Gretchen Braymer (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) in 44th (18:50) and senior Samantha Westveer (Kentwood/East Kentwood) in 45th (18:51). Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were junior Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) in 64th (19:12), freshman Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) 74th (19:17), senior Andrea Beukema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) 75th (19:17) and sophomore Christine Hartley (Pewaukee, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) 96th (19:38).

On the men’s side, Calvin’s Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) continued his outstanding junior campaign, finishing seventh individually with a time of 25:19. Calvin’s next finisher was senior Alex Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View HS) in 36th (25:55) with senior Ben Van Wyk (Sussex, NJ) 37th (25:56), senior Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/New Ipswich HS) 42nd (26:02) and junior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) 43rd (26:03). Junior Rhett Morici (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North HS) also had a strong finish, placing 53rd (26:15). Rounding out Calvin’s finishers were sophomore David Vande Bunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) in 75th (26:56) and sophomore Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/New Ipswich HS) in 104th (27:48).

In the women’s open divisision race, junior Eva Kort (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty HS) was 26th (19:41), freshman Devin Van Doornik (Zeeland/Zeeland East HS) 35th (19:56), senior Elizabeth Feenstra (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) 38th (20:06); freshman Rebekah Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) 42nd (20:22), senior Kristen Fletcher (Fort Wayne, IN/Concordia Lutheran HS) 45th (20:29) and senior Anna Van Wyk (Dorr/South Christian HS) 62nd (21:45).

In the men’s open division race, sophomore Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) was sixth (26:10), sophomore Matt Vander Roest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) 15th (26:53), sophomore Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) 16th (26:53), junior Ben Lewis (South Haven/South Haven HS) 27th (27:28), junior Martin Avila (Cicero, IL/Waulter Lutheran HS) 28th (27:30) and senior Jake Baker (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) 34th (27:41).

A group of Calvin College runners will compete at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Saturday.
