ANGOLA, IN – A save by Calvin College senior Darrin Cline helped the Knights stop Trine – all coming in just the nick of time.

Cline’s stop of a Trine penalty kick with 3:26 left in regulation enabled Calvin to hold on to a 1-0 lead and moments later the win.

Cline’s dramatics were preceded by the first goal of the year by senior Ben Buehrle (Wyoming/Tri-unity Christian HS). The goal came with just 9:31 left on the clock with Buerhle collecting a well-placed pass from sophomore teammate Scott Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the slot and placing a left-footed shot just inside the far post.

With Trine pressing for the tying goal, Calvin was assessed a foul in the box and the host Thunder (6-7 overall, 4-3 MIAA) were awarded a penalty kick. Cline was up to the task however, making the dramatic save.

The shutout victory was the sixth of the year for Cline and the 12th of his career.

More importantly, Tuesday’s victory over Trine kept the Knights in sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as Calvin improved to 10-3 overall and 7-0 in the MIAA, three points ahead of second place Hope (6-1-0 MIAA) at the midpoint of the league schedule.

After opening the year with a 2-3 start, Calvin has won eight consecutive games. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they travel to Albion for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
