Carissa Verkaik Named to d3hoops.com Team of the Week

Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik has received the first national award of her collegiate career. The 6-2 center out of Holland Christian High School has been named to the d3hoops.com Team of the Week. Earlier this week, Verkaik was named the MIAA Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
A native of Holland, Verkaik led the Calvin women’s basketball team to a pair of victories at the Olivet Comet Thanksgiving Classic with a pair of double-double performances. Verkaik had 26 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots in a 79-66 win over Elmhurst and followed with 23 points, 13 boards and five blocks in an 86-73 win over Siena Heights the following afternoon.
In a 60-44 win at Manchester on Tuesday, Verkaik had 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots. She is currently averaging 16.5 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game.
Calvin is currently 6-0 on the year and ranked 25th by d3hoops.com and 19th in the latest ESPN/USA Today Division III Coaches’ poll.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it faces a 4-0 Carthage team at 8:30 p.m. (EST). The game will be broadcast via audio and video at: Calvin/Carthage Video-Audio Broadcast
