Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Player of the Week in Women’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through November 29.
Verkaik, a freshman from Holland (Holland Christian HS), scored 49 points, pulled down 26 rebounds and blocked nine shots in earning tournament Most Valuable Player honors at the Olivet Comet Classic. She scored 26 points and added 13 rebounds in a 79-66 victory over Elmhurst, Ill., then came back the next day to score 23 points, pull down 13 boards and block five shots as the
Knights defeated Siena Heights, 86-73.
Verkaik is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Verkaik is averaging 17.8 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots a game. She has four double-doubles on the season and has helped Calvin win its first five games.
