Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Women’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Albion center Patty Rewa and Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its MIAA Co-Players of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through November 19. Verakik, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), averaging 17.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and four blocked shots per game as the Knights won three straight games to open the season.
She scored 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked seven shots in a season-opening 48-43 win over Manchester, Ind., and later had 15 points, 11 boards and five blocked shots as Calvin won a weekend tournament at Anderson, Ind., 70-55.
Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the seventh time in her career, converted 50 percent of her field goal attempts (22 of 44) and 88 percent of her free throws (7 of 8) for the week.
Calvin returns to action this Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Siena Heights Thanksgiving Tournament. Calvin will face Iowa Wesleyan at 5 p.m. on Friday night. Saturday’s schedule has the championship game set for 3 p.m. and the consolation game for 1 p.m.
