GRAND RAPIDS—For the second consecutive year, recent Calvin College graduate Cara Van Woerkom has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. A native of Wyoming, Michigan, and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Van Woerkom has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team selection in the women’s at-large college division.
A year ago, Van Woerkom was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team.
A four-year member of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team, Van Woerkom was a standout in the freestyle events, earning NCAA III All-America honors eight times and honorable mention All-America honors six times during her collegiate career. At the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships this past March, Van Woerkom helped Calvin finish seventh as a team by finishing 13th in the 50 freestyle and swimming on Calvin’s All-America 400 medley, 200 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay teams.
Van Woerkom was a national qualifier four consecutive years and helped Calvin post four straight top-10 national team finishes as the Knights were sixth in 2006, fourth in 2007, eighth in 2008 and seventh this past March.
A two-time All-MIAA selection, Van Woerkom was also a part of four MIAA championship teams. She was the 2008 MIAA champion in the 50 freestyle and was the league runner-up in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events in 2009.
A Spanish major with a minor in biology, Van Woerkom carried a 3.92 grade point average. She was an eight-time member of the Calvin Dean’s List and is expected to be a four-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. She plans to attend the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee next fall.
Van Woerkom has also been heavily involved in the community, serving as a Child Life Volunteer at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. She has also volunteered at the Christian Learning Center, working with cognitively impaired young adults. Last summer, she volunteered with the My Team Triumph group, assisting physically and/or cognitively disabled athletes so that they could participate in area triathlons
