Canto is Medalist on Day One of MIAA Fall Tournament - Knights Fourth Through Day One

BATTLE CREEK – The Calvin women’s golf team is in fourth place on the first day of the two-day, 36-hole MIAA Fall Tournament but the Knights remain in third place in the overall MIAA standings. Calvin fired a team score of 341 strokes. The tournament is being hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
The Knights remain 23 strokes ahead of fourth place Trine in the overall team standings. The top four teams in the final MIAA standings will qualify for the MIAA Spring Tournament which is used to determine the MIAA’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Tournament.
Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) had a tremendous performance on Friday, earning medalist honors with a career-best score of 73. Canto is now just two strokes out of first place in the overall MIAA individual standings with Saturday’s final round to be played Saturday morning.
Sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) also had a strong afternoon, firing a round of 85 while sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) had an 88 and sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) a 98. Rouning out Calvin’s top five was sophomore Shara Reynolds (Big Rapids/Big Rapids HS with a round of 101.
Host Olivet took first place on Friday with a score of 326 and holds first control of first place in the overall MIAA standings. Trine was second with 334, Saint Mary’s third at 338 and Hope fifth at 363.
Saturday’s final round is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
