Calvin’s Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through January 19.

Verkaik, a senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), became the leading career scorer in MIAA women’s basketball history Wednesday as she scored 37 points in an 85-62 road victory over Adrian. She also grabbed 11 rebounds, blocked three shots and added three assists. She now has 1,055 points in 56 MIAA league games for her career. She then became the first player in Calvin women’s history to go over 2,000 career points overall as she added 22 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots in a 74-54 nonconference victory over Rochester. Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and tenth time in her career, shot 57 percent from the field (21 of 37) and 89 percent at the free-throw line (17 of 19) for the week.

Calvin is back in action Wednesday evening when it hosts Albion at 7:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
