Calvin Women’s Track & Field Wins Calvin Invitational - Men’s Team Takes Second

The Huizenga Tennis and Track Center (Sturrus Track) was the site of the Calvin Indoor Track and Field Invitational Friday night for the second year and both Calvin teams had strong performances. On the women’s side, Calvin defended its own invitational title with a first place total of 175 points, 20 points ahead of Aquinas. On the men’s side, Calvin took second with 130 points, 22 points behind Aquinas.
In the women’s meet, Calvin received a pair of first place performances from junior Hillary Banning as she captured first place in the long jump (16-0 3/4) and triple jump (34-1 1/2). Other winners for the Calvin women included senior Kaitlin Diemer in the mile run (5:08.80), sophomore Olivia Butler in the 800 meters (2:28.01) and sophomore Lizzy Vannette in the 5,000 meters (18:36.10). Calvin’s distance medley relay team of senior Sarah Fennema, sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen, freshman Nicole Kremers and freshman Liza Gunnink also won with a time of 13:05.14.
On the men’s side, junior Aaron Meckes continued to excel, winning the shot put with a throw of 50-4. Other individual winners for Calvin included senior Nathan Frazier in the 1,600 meters (4:33.47) and sophomore Sam Kerk in the 5,000 meters (15:52.95). Calvin’s distance medley relay team of sophomore Josh Ferguson, freshman Jacob Kuyvenhoven, freshman Stephen Norregaard and senior Dan Kerr took first place with a time of 10:52.44.
