USTFCCA Women's Track and Field All-Academic List

NEW ORLEANS - The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced the menís 2010 Division III All-Academic Track & Field team. A total of 330 student-athletes representing 99 institutions compose the group. Calvin was second among all squads with 10 individuals so honored with Wartburg first with 12. Individuals from the Calvin women’s track and field team that received USTFCCA All-Academic status include Rachel Boerner, Gretchen Braymer, Sarah Dugan, Nicole Farr, Jordan Gabrielse, Jessica Koster, Joy Leach, Alyssa Penning, Mary Tolsma and Rebekah VanDyk.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met either the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event.

A junior, Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ/Hillcrest Lutheran Academy) is making her third straight appearance on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. Boerner had a sensational track and field campaign this past year, both indoors and outdoors. During the indoor season, Boerner captured the national title in the 400 meters at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships, becoming Calvin’s first-ever indoor national champion. She then doubled her output during the outdoor season, winning national titles in the 400 meters and 400 meter hurdles in a span of one hour at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Boerner is believed to be the first NCAA women’s track and field athlete to pull off the rare 400/400 meter hurdles double in the same year.

A senior, Braymer (Erie, PA/Collegiate Academy) is receiving all-academic accolades for the second straight year. Braymer qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 3,000 meter steeplechase for the second consecutive year. At the national meet, she placed 15th.

A senior, Dugan (Freeland, MI/Freeland HS) is making her second straight appearance on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. During the outdoor season, Dugan clocked an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 37:12.77 in the 10,000 meters at the Hillsdale Gina Relays.

A senior, Farr (Wheaton, IL/Warrenville South HS) is also receiving all-academic honors from the second straight year. Farr was an NCAA III provisional qualifier in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:02.65.

A sophomore, Gabrielse (Allendale, MI/Unity Christian HS) is making her first appearance on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. During the outdoor season, Gabrielse qualified for the NCAA III Championships as a member of Calvin’s 4x400 meter relay team.

A senior, Koster (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian HS) is receiving all-academic honors for the third straight year. A distance specialist, Koster posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 meters during the indoor season and then qualified for the national meet during the outdoor season in the 10,000 meters. At the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Koster claimed All-America honors in the 10,000 meters for the second straight season, placing sixth.

A senior, Leach (Charlottsville, VA/Charlottsville HS) is making her second straight appearance on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. During the indoor season, Leach posted a provisional qualifying performance in the pole vault - doing so while also competing for the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team and later qualifying for the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships as a diver. During the outdoor season, Leach qualified for the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the pole vault, finishing 16th individually. Leach was also named to the College Swim Coaches Association All-Academic team earlier this month, doing so by virtue of posting an NCAA III qualifying performance and maintaining a GPA of 3.50 or above.

A freshman, Penning (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian HS) is receiving all-academic honors for the first time in track and field. This spring, she posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 11:07.53 at the Hillsdale Gina Relays.

A senior, Tolsma (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) is receiving all-academic honors for the first time. This spring, Tolsma posted an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 37:24.56 in the 10,000 meters at the Hillsdale Gina Relays.

A junior, VanDyk (Bellflower, CA/Valley Christian HS) is making her first appearance on the USTFCCCA All-Academic team. This spring, VanDyk was an national qualifier in the high jump. AT the national meet, she placed 17th individually.

The Calvin women’s track and field team was led by first-year head coach Bret Otte this season.
