Calvin Women’s Cross Country Team Capture Third Straight Great Lakes Regional Title

HOLLAND, MI - The Calvin women’s cross country team fought off a rugged group of teams to capture its third consecutive Great Lakes Regional title Saturday afternoon at the West Ottawa Golf Club. Ranked seventh nationally, Calvin finished with a first place team score of 69 points in the 6K race, outdistancing 10th-ranked Hope which took second with 103 points. Both teams qualify for next week’s NCAA III Championships at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
Calvin junior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago Christian HS) led the Knights by placing fourth individually in a time of 21:48. She was one of three Calvin runners in the top 10 as sophomore Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) was ninth (22:07) and senior Gretchen Braymer (Alymer, PA/Collegiate Academy) 10th (22:09).
All seven of Calvin’s runners finished in the top 35 as junior Kaitlin Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) was 22nd (22:39), senior Samantha Westveer (Kentwood/East Kentwood HS) 24th (22:42), senior Alison Tuuk (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) 27th (22:45) and freshman Alyssa Oram (Cheboyban, MI/Home Schooled) 35th (22:54).
In finishing in the top 35, all seven Calvin runners earn spots on the Great Lakes All-Region team.
Joanna Johnson of Oberlin took first place individually in Saturday’s race with a time of 21:14, winning the race by a three-second margin. Case Western Reserve, ranked 23rd nationally, took third place with a team score of 115 points while Oberlin was fourth with 149 points and 20th-ranked Ohio Northern fifth with 152 points.
