Calvin Track & Field Teams Compete at Grand Rapids Open

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Grand Rapids Open hosted by Aquinas College Saturday afternoon at Houseman Field.
The Calvin women’s team had a strong showing in the 400 meter hurdles as senior Rachel Boerner won the event with a season-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 1:02.97. Junior Jordan Gabrielse was third (1:06.14) and freshman Hillary Banning fifth (1:09.61).
Other first place performances for the Calvin women included senior Sarah Reasoner in the shot put (44-0 1/2), sophomore Carissa Verkaik in the high jump (5-3) and the 4x400 meter relay team of Boerner, Gabrielse, freshman Julie Busscher and freshman Rebekah Folkema in a time of 4:03.01.
Other notable performance for the Calvin women included junior Lindsey VanderBrug taking second in the 100 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 15.61, Banning taking second in the triple jump (34-5 1/2), sophomore Jen Silvestro taking third in the shot put (37-2 1/2), Reasoner taking third (139-5) and senior Leigha Oberle taking fourth (137-8) in the discus.
On the men’s side, sophomore Aaron Meckes won the shot put (48-4) and was second in the discus (139-10). In addition, Jake Baker took second for the Knights in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:02.59), freshman Evert Geerlings was second in the pole vault (13-11 1/4) and freshman Ryan Huffman was second in the long jump (22-0 3/4).
