Calvin Track & Field Teams Compete at Ferris State Bulldog Invitational

BIG RAPIDS - the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational on Saturday.
On the women’s side, junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) won the discus with a season best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 146-7. She also took second in the shot put with an NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 44-6 1/4. Calvin junior Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids Christian HS was second in the discus with a throw of 134-6.
In the women’s high jump, junior Rebekah VanDyk (Bellflower, CA) tied for first with a jump of 5-3. Sophomore Jordan Gabrielse (Unity Christian HS) won the 400 meter hurdles (1:06.03). Junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ) was second in the 400 meters with a time of 57.79. Senior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) was second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:30.28) while freshman Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was third (11:41.91) and senior Jesi Hale (Gallup, NM) fourth (11:45.28).
Senior Joy Leach (Charlottsville, VA) was second in the pole vault (11-0).
On the men’s side, senior Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:39.70) while senior George Visser (West Chicago, IL) was second (9:42.44). Senior Zach Vanderlaan (Holt, MI) won the long jump (22-10 1/2) while freshman teammate Kyle Jasperse (Escondido, CA) was second (21-6 3/4). Jasperse was also third in the triple jump (44-1 1/2). junior Ben VanWyk (Sussex, NJ) was second in the 5,000 meters (15:21.71), senior Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) was third in the 110 high hurdles (15.48), freshman Aaron Meckes (Bay City) was third in the shot put (48-10 1/4) and senior Joel Klingenberg (Hamilton, ON) second in the javelin (176-5).
Both Calvin teams will now prepare to compete in the MIAA Jamboree next Saturday at Olivet.
