Calvin Track Athletes Post NCAA III Qualifying Times at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE—A group of Calvin track athletes had sensational performances on day one of the Grand Valley State Big Meet Invitational Friday night. On the women’s side, senior Lauren Bergstrom (Rochester, MN) posted an NCAA III (indoor) automatic qualifying time of 2:10.65 in taking fourth place. Senior Anne Fennema (Brookfield, WI) also had a big night, posting a season-best time of 17:58.23 in the 5,000 meters which was good for 18th place.

On the men’s side, senior Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA) ran wild, finishing sixth in the 5,000 meters with an NCAA III (indoor) automatic qualifying time of 14:25.75. The time was less than half-a-second off the Calvin outdoor 5,000 meter record time of 14:25.51 set by Joel Klooster in 2002.

In addition, senior Erik VanKampen (Elmhurst, IL) had an NCAA III (indoor) provisional qualifying time of 14:44.17 in the 5,000 meters. Sophomore Jake Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH) also had a season-best time of 14:55.21 in the 5,000 meters.

Finally, senior Jared Cok (Bozeman, MT) had an NCAA III (indoor) provisional qualifying time of 49.50 in the 400 meters that was good for fourth place.

Calvin will continue competition tomorrow at the GVSU Big Meet Invitational.
