Calvin Track and Field Teams Produce Strong Efforts at Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University on Saturday.
In the women’s competition, junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took first place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:16.37. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan/Home Schooled) took seventh in a time of 11:27.62.
Senior Carissa Verkaik (Holland/Holland Christian HS) tied for second in the high jump with a leap of 5-3. In the triple jump, Calvin had a pair of top 10 finishers as freshman Kara Steenstra (Grand Rapids/Calvin Christian HS) was sixth (34-11 3/4) and junior Hilary Banning (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) ninth (34-5). Calvin also had a pair of top 10 finishers in the javelin as junior Lauren Madden (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) was fifth (113-1) and sophomore Jordyn Platt (Wood Dale, IL/Timothy Christian HS) sixth (111-8).
In the sprints, junior Julie Busscher had season best times in the 100 meters (12.52) and 200 meters (25.51).
On the men’s side, Calvin’s signature event was the 5,000 meters as senior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) took first place in a time of 14:43.62 while senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) was fourth (14:51.62), senior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) fifth (14:51.98) and senior David VandeBunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) 10th (15:17.82).
Calvin picked up a ninth place finish from sophomore Stephen Norregard (Wheaton, IL/Wheaton North HS) in the 400 meters (51.02). Senior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) also had a season-best time of 3:54.96 in taking fifth in the 1,500 meters.
Another top 10 Calvin finish came in the 110 high hurdles as sophomore Erik Holstege (Kewsick, VA/Monticello HS) was ninth (15.30). Sophomore Calvin Kuyers (Lansing, IL/Lansing Christian HS) had a strong performance in taking sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (55.93).
In the high jump, freshman Jon Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for eighth (6-3 1/4). In the shot put, senior Aaron Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was sixth (50-11) while junior Andrew Dykstra (Whitinsville, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) was 10th (44-11). In the discus, Meckes was ninth (154-4). In the javelin, Dykstra was sixth (153-4).
Both Calvin teams return to action on Saturday, competing at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Olivet College.
