Calvin Track and Field Teams Claim First Place at Calvin Collegiate Indoor Championships

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted the Calvin Collegiate Indoor Track and Field Championships and both Calvin teams took first place. The Calvin men’s team took first place in a field of nine teams with 180 points while the Calvin women’s team took first place in a field of eight teams with a team score of 203.5 points.
Calvin took first place in five events and took second in four more in finishing nearly 80 points ahead of Trine University which garnered 104.5 points.
Junior Erik Holstege took first place in the men’s heptathlon with 4,653 points and then placed second in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.68.
Calvin’s distance crew had a strong day as its distance medley relay team of junior Josh Ferguson, senior Stephen Tubergen, sophomore Andre Otte and freshman Andrew Woznick won in a time of 10:34.30.
Sophomore Jeff Meitler had a season-best time of 4:26.47 in winning the mile run while senior Philip Spitzer won the 5,000 meters in 15:18.77. Sophomore Ethan Anderson also claimed second place in the 5,000 meters in 15:35.70.
In the high jump, freshman Jeiel Burrell took second in the high jump at 6-2 3/4.
Perhaps the biggest performance of the day came from sophomore Eric Jipping who unleashed a career-best throw of 52-6 in winning the shot put competition.
Calvin took first place in five events and placed second or third in several other events to pile up a first place total of 203.5 points, finishing nearly 90 points ahead of second place Hope.
Freshman Bethany VanEck won the pentathlon held on Friday. Calvin’s first running event on Saturday was the distance medley relay and its team of sophomore McKenzie Diemer, seniors Olivia Butler and Rebekah Folkema and junior Kate Ardinger won in aa tie of 12:33.68.
Folkema also took second in the 800 meters (21:94) while Ardinger was second in the mile run (5:25.35).
In the 5,000 meters, senior Nicole Michmerhuizen took first place in 17:09.20 while junior Sarah Danner was second (17:50.97).
In the 3,000 meters, junior Paige McGahan turned in a second place time of 10:29.20.
In the sprints, senior Julie Busscher had a strong day, winning the 200 meters in a season-best time of 25.86 while placing third inthe 60 meters (8.00).
Calvin also picked up points in the field events as senior Hilary Banning had a career-best leap of 37-2 1/2 to win the triple jump while also taking second in the long jump with a leap of 16-10 3/4. Freshman Carissa Weis was also second in the triple jump (34-7 3/4) while sophomore Daisy Peters was second in the pole vault (9-6 1/4).
A group of Calvin athletes will now compete at last-chance meets next weekend with the intentions of attempting to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships March 15 and 16 at Nebraska Wesleyan.
