Calvin Track and Field Teams Battle the Elements At Grand Rapids Open

Despite torrential rain and high winds, several members of the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams posted strong performances at the Grand Rapids Open hosted by Aquinas College at Houseman field Saturday afternoon.
Highlights for the Calvin women’s team on Saturday included NCAA III provisional qualifying performances from junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) in the discus and sophomore Jordan Gabrielse (Unity chrisitan HS) in the 400 meter hurdles. Reasoner took first place in the discus with a (NCAA III) provisional qualifying and season-best throw of 141-1. She and teammate Leigha Oberle (Grand Rapids Christian HS) both have throws above 141 feet this spring. Competing in her first year of collegiate track and field and competing in the 400 meter hurdles for just the second time in her running career, Gabrielse took third in the event with a time of 1:02.22. Her time was less than three-tenths of a second away from an automatic qualifying time and is the second-fatest time in the event in NCAA III women’s track and field this spring.
Junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ) also had a strong day for the Calvin women’s team, placing third in the 800 meters with a career-best time of 2:17.15 and also tying for second in the 100 meter hurdles (16.30).
Another notable performances for the Calvin women’s team included senior Jesi Hale (Gallup, NM) with a season-best time of 17:50.20 in the 5,000 meters.
On the men’s side, sophomore Nick Kramer (Dyer, IN) highlighted the afternoon for the Knights, placing second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with an NCAA III provisional qualifying time of 9:21.82. The race was Kramer’s first showing in the steeplechase.
Other notable performances for the Calvin men included senior Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) taking third in the 110 high hurdles (15.70), senior Brad Stroner (Lake Odessa HS) taking fourth in the 100 meter dash (11.31), senior Aaron Goodman (Milwaukee, WI) taking fourth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:30.00) with junior Ben VanWyk (Sussex, NJ) fifth (9:34.07). Senior Caleb Rottman (Fargo, ND) was also tied for second in the high jump (6-2 3/4) while freshman Kyle Jasperse (Escondido, CA) was third (20-9 3/4) and senior Zach VanderLaan (Holt, MI) fourth (20-6 1/4) in the long jump. Jasperse was also second in the triple jump (43-2 1/4) with senior Jonathon DeRuiter (Bellingham, WA) third (42-3 1/2). Freshman Aaron Meckes (Bay City, Mich.) also had a season-best throw of 136-1 in placing fifth in the discus
Both Calvin teams returns to action next Saturday, competing at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational.
