January Softball Clinic Another Success for Calvin Softball Team
Tuesday, November 01, 2011
For the second straight year, the Calvin softball team and its coaching staff hosted a high school softball clinic inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. This year’s clinic took place on January 21 and included nearly 30 clinic registrants. Although the weather outside was cold, the action inside Calvin’s T & T facility was red-hot as the high school players attending were given expert instruction on fielding, hitting and pitching.
“The clinic was another great success,” said Calvin head softball coach Sharon DeKleine. “The players that attended received a lot of one-on-one instruction and the atmosphere was very positive.”
The day began with a morning defensive skills session for outfielders, infielders and catchers. The group then broke for lunch at noon inside Calvin’s adjacent Hoogenboom Fitness and Recreation Center. The afternoon included a two-hour offensive skills session followed by an hour-and-a-half pitching clinic.
“The camaraderie was very good with our campers and I know the players on our (Calvin) team enjoyed being part of the instruction,” said DeKleine. “Even our lunch break was lively and spirited. When there’s snow outside, it’s fun to start thinking and talking softball. We have a tremendous (Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex) facility that allows us to host an event like this in the middle of the winter. I think everyone who attended got a chance to see those facilities which was a big bonus.”
According to DeKleine, plans for next year’s clinic are already underway. “It’s definitely something we want to continue doing,” said DeKleine. “We’d like to keep the event growing each and every year.”
