Calvin Swimming and Diving Teams Claim Dual Meet Victories Over Hope

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams recorded dual meet victories over rival Hope Saturday afternoon in front of a standing room only crowd at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center.

In the women’s meet, Calvin defeated the Flying Dutch 164-136. On the men’s side, Calvin edged the Flying Dutchmen 146.5-to-133.5 The Calvin women are now 5-3 overall in dual meet competition including 5-0 against league opponents. The Calvin men are now 4-3 overall and 3-1 against league opponents.

An early turning point in the women’s meet came in the 200 freestyle when senior Stephanie Fox (Kentwood/Home Schooled) claimed an upset win with a time of 1:57.23. She was part of back-to-back-to-back wins by the Knights as they opened with a win in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:51.07 and followed with a win by sophomore Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View HS) in the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 10:52.21. Calvin’s 200 medley relay team consisted of senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS), senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS), senior Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA/Home Schooled) and freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS).

Counsell then came up with a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.89) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.47) while Rookus took home a win in the 50 freestyle (24.99) and 200 IM (2:14.36) and Wrobel a win in the 500 freestyle (5:17.18). Senior Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was a double-winner for the Knights, winning the one-meter diving competition (267.00) and three-meter diving competition (271.57).  Colasurdo also won the 100 butterfly (1:00.93).

On the men’s side, Calvin’s road to the win began with a win by freshman Caleb Meindertsma (Annondale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:07.49). Freshman Brandon Muma (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern HS) then won the 200 freestyle (1:47.87) with sophomore Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS) close behind in second (1:48.20). Freshman Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS) then won the 100 breaststroke (58.09) while junior Peter Johnson (Oak Forest, IL/Home Schooled) won the 200 butterfly (2:01.42).

Coming down the stretch, junior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS) claimed a win in the 100 freestyle (48.04) while Cochran, sophomore Andrew VanderLei (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Travis Vincent (Novi/Novi HS) brought home a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 breaststroke with Cochran clocking 2:12.27, VanderLei 2:15.46 and Vincent 2:16.11. 

Senior Mark Rushlow (Goshen/Northridge HS) then delivered a clutch win the 100 butterfly (52.11) as did senior Stephen Kraft (Warsaw, IN/Home Schooled) in the 200 IM (1:59.88). Kraft led a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 200 IM as Vincent was second (2:02.60) and Cochran third (2:02.78) to help clinch the win.

Both Calvin teams close out their dual meet campaigns on February 2 at Albion at 1 p.m.
