Calvin Softball Falls to Wesleyan - Defeats Wellesley - Finishes Spring Trip at 7-3

CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split a pair of games on Thursday on its final day of its spring trip, falling to Wesleyan University 4-0 before coming back to top Wellesley 3-1. The Knights conclude their spring trip with a 7-3 record.
In the loss to Wesleyan, junior Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss. Both teams had just four hits but Wesleyan capitalized on four walks and two Calvin errors. Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) also saw time in relief. Junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) had two of Calvin’s four hits while junior Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon Reeths-Puffer HS) and sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) had one hit apiece.
In the win over Wellesley, Avila picked up her fifth win of the season without a defeat, scattering nine hits while striking out nine.
Calvin jumped out to a 2-1 lead on a two-run RBI single by freshman catcher Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) in the bottom of the third. Calvin tacked on an insurance run on an RBI single by Avila.
Calvin will now prepare for its home opener next Wednesday when it is scheduled to host DePauw University in a non-conference twinbill at 3:30 p.m.
