Calvin Softball Falls in Extra-Innings to Trinity (CT) - Defeats Gallaudet in Mercy-Rule Win

CLERMONT, FL - Calvin split its Monday games in Florida, dropping an 8-5 decision in 10 innings to Trinity of Connecticut before coming back to defeat Gallaudet University 15-1 in five innings. The Knights are now 3-1 on the young season.
In the loss to Trinity, Calvin fell behind 3-0 but rallied with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Both teams scored single runs in the eighth and also again in the ninth. In the 10th, Trinity broke loose for three unanswered runs to put the game away.
Sophomore Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in while sophomore Christie VanderMeer (Grandville/Grandville HS) was 3-for-4.
Junior pitcher Caitlin Callow (Rochester/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) took the loss, tossing 9.2 innings before giving way to sophomore pitcher Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Swan Valley HS) tossed the final third.
In the win over Gallaudet, Calvin exploded for 12 runs in the first two innings to take control. Cok continued her blistering day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, home run and three runs batted in. Freshman Megan Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also belted a home run while junior pitcher Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) picked up the win, striking out three while running her season record to 2-0.
Calvin has games scheduled against Bowdoin and Framingham State scheduled for Tuesday.
