Monday, September 29, 2008
A pair of Calvin soccer players have received MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors as senior goalkeeper Darrin Cline has been named the MIAA Men’s Defensive Player of the Week while junior midfielder Allison Boender has been named the MIAA Women’s Defensive Player of the Week.
A senior from Grandville (Grandville HS), Cline had back-to-back shutouts in the net this past week to lower his season goals-against-average to 1.28. Last Wednesday, Cline had several crucial saves in a 2-0 victory over Albion, and followed that with another stellar performance in a 1-0 win over Alma.
Cline has four shutouts in eight games for the Knights this season and has 10 shutouts in his career.
Boender is also from Grandville and is a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School. This past Saturday, Boender led a strong Knights’ defense in a 5-0 victory at Hope in their conference opener. She shut down Hope’s leading scorer and minimized her impact on the game. With Boender spearheading the defense, Calvin has allowed just eight goals in eight games this season.
The Calvin men’s soccer team returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for a 4:00 p.m. league match. The Calvin women’s soccer team is back in action on Wednesday when it journeys to Adrian for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
