Calvin Second in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings - Wins MIAA Men’s All-Sports Award

Calvin’s bid for an MIAA Commisoner’s Cup title has come up short. The final MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings were released Tuesday evening and the Knights have once again finished in second place behind rival Hope College. Hope claimed the Commissioner’s Cup crown with 206 points with Calvin second with 202. Heading into the spring sports season, Calvin held an eight-point lead in the overall standings but Hope came up with a first place finish, four second place finishes and one third place finish by its spring sports teams to overtake the Knights. The MIAA Commisioner’s title is the 11th straight for Hope. Calvin shared the title with Hope in 2008 but has not won the outright title since 2000.

The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 18 sports for men and women.The final Commissionerís Cup standings are determined on the basis of each college’s standings in eight of nine sports for men and eight of nine sports for women.
Hope outscored Calvin 112-106 in the nine MIAA women’s sports, while Calvin edged Hope 96-94 in the nine MIAA men’s sports. By edging Hope on the men’s side, Calvin claims the Men’s All-Sports Award while Hope claims the Women’s All-Sports Award in addition to the (all-around) MIAA Commissioner’s Cup.

During the 2010-11 MIAA academic year, Calvin claimed a league-leading nine MIAA titles. Calvin teams that captured league titles included men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, volleyball, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving and men’s and women’s track and field. Calvin and Hope shared four of the MIAA title with the two rivals sharing the men’s soccer title, the women’s volleyball title, the women’s basketball crown and the men’s track and field championship.

The Commissionerís Cup (All-Sports Award) has been presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 33 times, followed by Albion 14, Kalamazoo 13, Calvin 9 and Alma 5.
