Calvin Places Fifth in Final Al Carius Program of the Year Award Standings
Wednesday, June 01, 2011
Calvin College has finished fifth in the Al Carius Menís Division III Program of the Year award. In the 2010-2011 academic year, the Knights took eighth at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships and then placed 12th at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships and followed with a 14th place finish at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Al Carius Program of the Year award - sponsored by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association - is given to an institution that had the best combined team finishes in each of the NCAAís cross country/track & field sports in a given academic year. It marks the first time that Calvin has finished in the top five of the Al Carius Program of the Year Award standings.
The Al Carius Program of the Year Award is named after USTFCCCA Hall of Famer and long-time North Central College head coach Al Carius. Carius is in his 46th year of service at North Central, still as head coach of the Cardinalsí cross country squad, and has won 21 NCAA Division III National Championships.
The NCAA Division III Program of the Year Awards are awarded annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division III cross country/track & field programs. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institutionís finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.
In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA Championships. Scoring is based on the teamís finish at each NCAA Division II Championship in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award recipient. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.
North Central claimed the Al Carius Program of the Year Award this season followed by Washington University (Mo.) in second, Wisconsin-Oshkosh in third, Wisconsin-Stevens Point in fourth and Calvin in fifth.
