ADRIAN—The ninth-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team improved to 6-2-1 overall and to 2-0-0 in MIAA play with a 2-0 victory at Adrian Wednesday afternoon. Calvin has now 21 consecutive MIAA regular season games dating back to the 2005 season.

Calvin got off to a quick start on a goal by junior Natalie Veurink (Spring Lake/Western Michigan Christian HS) just 5:17 into the match with sophomore Carly Prins (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.

Calvin continued to outshot Adrian 10-1 in the opening 45 minutes of play but could not add to its scoring total in the first half. The host Bulldogs (6-3-1 overall, 1-1-0 MIAA) then cranked up the pressure, forcing Calvin’s junior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer (St. Charles, MO/Whitfield HS) to make three key saves in the opening 12 minutes of the second half.

Calvin regained the momentum and found the back of the net with 25:34 left in regulation time on a goal by senior Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/)Victor J. Andrew HS) off an assist from Veurink. The goal was the fifth of the year for Ribbens.

Calvin then held Adrian in check the rest of the match to gain its fifth shutout victory of the year.

Calvin held a 12-6 shots at goal advantage with Sulzer and junior Alyssa Bergsma (Walker/Calvin Christian HS combining on the shutout in nets for the Knights.

Calvin is now tied for first place in the MIAA standings with Alma. The Knights will host Alma next Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Prior to that match, Calvin will journey down to Kenyon on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference match.
