Calvin Picked as Preseason Favorite in MIAA Volleyball Coaches’ Poll

The first-ever MIAA coaches poll in women’s volleyball has been announced and Calvin has been selected as the preseason choice to win the 2011 MIAA title.
The Knights received eight first place votes in the poll while Hope received one first place vote. The Flying Dutch, who received the other first place vote, were picked to finish second in the poll.
Alma was selected to finish third, followed by Kalamazoo, Olivet, Trine, Adrian, Saint Mary’s and Adrian.
Calvin has won at least a share of three of the last five MIAA titles and since 1982, has won 12 league titles. A year ago, Calvin shared the MIAA regular season crown with Hope as both teams finished 15-1 in league play. Calvin later continued on to win its first-ever national championship, winning all six of its NCAA III Tournament matches including a four-set win against number-one ranked Emory University in the national championship final.
The Knights will enter the 2011 season ranked number-one in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll.
Calvin is scheduled to open its season on September 2 and 3 at a tournament hosted by Thomas More College (Ky.) with the Knights slated to face Hiram, Transylvania, Thomas More and Otterbein at the tournament.
