Calvin Men’s Swimming and Diving Team Set to Kick of 2012-13 Campaign
Thursday, October 18, 2012
The Calvin men’s swimming and diving team looks forward to the upcoming 2012-13 season with great anticipation. Under the direction of head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Knights welcome back 15 returning letterwinners from last year’s team that posted a school record total of 635 points at the MIAA Championships. Included in the list of returning athletes are a pair of All-MIAA selections in senior Mark Rushlow and sophomore Travis Vincent. In addition, Calvin brings in one of its largest recruiting classes in recent memory as the list of newcomers includes 11 freshmen and one junior.
The Calvin roster includes five seniors in Stephen Kraft, Rushlow, Sam Alison, Mathias Bares and Devin Heitz. Kraft (Warsaw, IN/Home Schooled) has been a consistent point producer for the Knights in the breaststroke and IM events. Rushlow (Goshen, IN/Northridge HS) had a big conference meet last Feburary, winning the 100 butterfly with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 49.33 that was just eight hundreths of a second off the Calvin school record time of 49.25. He also placed third in the 100 backstroke and second in the 100 freestyle. In addition, he was a part of Calvin’s school record-setting 200 and 400 medley relay teams. He later competed at the NCAA III Championships for a second straight year.
Alison (Dimondale/Lansing Waverly HS) competes in the backstroke and freestyle events while Bares has been a distance freestyle specialist for the Knights. At the MIAA Championships last year, Bares took fourth in the 1,650 freestyle. Heitz (Brockport, NY/Brockport HS) competes in the sprint freestyle events.
The junior class includes Adam Alexander (Holland/Holland Christian HS), Jon Dennison (Homewood, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor HS), David Doud (Marshall/Marshall HS), Peter Johnson (Oak Forest, IL/Home Schooled), Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS) and newcomer Morgan Zablocki (Walnut Creek, CA/Contra Costa Christian HS). Alexander and Johnson are both butterfly and freestyle specialists while Dennison will serve as Calvin’s lone diver this year. Doud competes in the IM and butterfly while Mitchell has been a top point producer for Calvin at the conference level in the backstroke and butterfly events. Zablocki is scheduled to compete for Calvin in the breaststroke and IM events after transferring in from Gordon College.
The sophomore class includes Vincent, Alex Baumann (Holland/Holland Christian HS), Ben Keller (Valparaiso, IN/Valparaiso HS), Nathan Terschak (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and Andrew VanderLei (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Vincent made a big splash in his first conference meet as a collegian. Last weekend at the MIAA Championships, he finished third in the 200 breaststroke with a school record time of 2:07.07. He also placed second in the 400 IM and third in the 200 IM. Baumann was a strong freestyle swimmer for the Knights as a freshman, placing third at the MIAA Championships in the 200 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle while also placing ninth in the 500 freestyle.
Keller competes in the sprint freestyle events while Terschak competes in the IM and butterfly events. VanderLei is a breaststroke and IM competitor.
The freshmen class includes several promising prospects according to head coach Dan Gelderloos. “We have a solid group of veterans returning and a very talented freshmen class,” said Gelderloos. “I think that combination should allow our team to raise our level of competition. We are very excited about the upcoming season and what lies ahead.”
Calvin will open its season on October 20 when it hosts the annual MIAA Relays. Non-conference dual meets are scheduled with Grand Valley State, Wheaton and Wayne State. Calvin will also hosts its own Calvin Winter Invitational November 29-December 1. In addition, Calvin will compete at the University of Chicago Classic January 11 and 12. Conference dual meets are sprinkled throughout November, January and February including a home dual meet with rival Hope on January 19.
The MIAA Championships are slated to be held February 13-16 at nearby Jenison High School. Another highlight on the schedule is the first-ever NCAA III Diving Regional to be held at Calvin. The regional, which will determine qualifiers to the NCAA III Championships, will be held at the Venema Aquatic Center March 1 and 2. The NCAA III Championships are slated to be held March 20-23 in Shenandoah, Texas.
