ROYAL OAK - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named two Calvin College players – striker Michael Holwerda and defender Lucas Wilgenburg – its players of the week in men’s soccer.
Holwerda, a junior from Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS), played a major role in two key victories as the Knights moved into sole possession of first place in the MIAA. He assisted on the game’s only goal as Calvin edged Hope, 1-0, handing the Flying Dutchmen their first loss of the season, and scored the game-winning goal in the second half as the Knights defeated Adrian, 2-1.
Wilgenburg, a sophomore from Visalia, Calif. (Central Valley Christian HS), anchored the Knights’ defensive effort in their wins over Hope and Adrian. With Wilgenburg playing a pivotal role, Calvin had allowed just three goals in six league contests this season.
