Saturday, October 27, 2012
ADRIAN – Calvin clinched the outright MIAA regular season title with a 2-2 double-overtime tie at Adrian Saturday afternoon. It marks the third time in four years that Calvin has fought Adrian to a tie at Adrian’s Performance Stadium.
In Saturday’s games, Calvin came from behind to take a 2-1 lead but then saw Adrian tie the game in the closing minutes of regulation. The tie snaps Calvin’s 12-game win streak but the Knights maintain an unbeaten streak of 13 games heading into their regular season finale at Alma on Tuesday.
Calvin outshot Adrian 25-10 in Saturday’s match but the Bulldogs struck first, scoring off a free kick in the 41st minute of play as Travis Smith headed in a shot off a service into the box by teammate Pat Bradley.
Calvin picked up the pressure early in the second half and tied the game at one on an unassisted goal by sophomore Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 66th minute of play.
The Knights then took a 2-1 lead with just 6:36 left in regular as freshman Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) kicked in a rebound shot that came back to him after originally striking the post.
Adrian answered right back however as Nick Minshell headed in a crossing pass from Ryan McCarthy just 54 seconds later to knot the score at two.
Calvin outshot Adrian 6-1 in the two overtime sessions but Adrian goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulous had four overtime saves. Giantsopoulous had 11 saves in nets for Adrian while Calvin goalkeeper Jared Rushlau (Grandville/Grandville HS) had four saves.
Calvin (13-3-1 overall, 11-1-1 MIAA) will travel to Alma on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match. The Knights will then host an MIAA Tournament semifinal match on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field against an opponent yet to be determined.
