Calvin Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Teams in Second Place Through Day One of Chicago Invite

CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are in second place through one day of competition at the University of Chicago Invitational. In the men’s competition, Calvin is in second place in a field of seven teams with 262 points. On the women’s side, Calvin is in second place in a field of six teams with 232 points. Host Chicago leads the men’s competition with 326 points while Lincoln College leads the women’s field with 263 points.
In the women’s competition, freshman Kathryn Wrobel had a season-best performance in winning the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:17.97. She was one of five Calvin swimmers in the top nine as junior Shelby Cloyd was fifth (5:22.51), junior Bridget Scott seventh (5:25.02), sophomore Elizabeth Schleh eighth (5:28.47) and freshman Erika Waugh ninth (5:29.53). In the women’s 50 freestyle, senior Rachel Bos had a big swim, clocking in with a second place time of 25.48. Sophomore Margaret Rechel was sixth (25.86), freshman Betsy Otten ninth (26.43) and sophomore Maria Sedjo 10th (26:46).
In the women’s 200 freestyle relay, the Calvin quartet of Bos, freshman Alex Dhaenens, Sedjo and junior Stephanie Fox took second with a season-best time of 1:41.79. In the 400 medley, Calvin took third with a a time of 4:06.18. Members of the team were Waugh, junior Elizabeth Counsell, junior Rachel Colasurdo and Fox.
In the men’s meet, Calvin senior Ross Battoclette earned a second place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:53.03. Junior Mathias Bares was fourth (5:00.69) while freshman Alex Buamann was seventh (5:06.16) and senior Greg Gorham eighth (5:09.05). In the men’s 200 IM junior Stephen Kraft was third (2:01.42) and freshman Travis Vincent seventh (2:04.58).
In the 50 freestyle, junior Mark Rushlow was eighth (22.37). Calvin’s 400 medley relay team of sophomore Andrew Mitchell, Gorham, Rushlow and Battoclette was third (3:36.44) while its 200 freestyle relay of Mitchell, Battoclette, Rushlow and Baumann was also third (1:28.09).
