Calvin Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams Ready for 2011-12 Season

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open their seasons on October 22 when both teams compete at the MIAA Relays at the Holland Aquatic Center. On the men’s side, Calvin returns 16 letterwinners including 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Diver Andrew Krafft. A sophomore, Krafft is coming off a record-breaking 2011 season that saw him earn national runner-up honors on the one-meter board at the NCAA III Championships and a third place finish on the three-meter board. Along the way, Krafft established new Calvin records for six and 11 dives on both boards. Krafft is one of four divers on the Calvin roster.
The senior class includes Ross Battoclette, Luke Griffioen and Chris Shepperly. The junior class is headlined by Stephen Kraft who along with Andrew Krafft, was a member of the 2011 All-MIAA team. Other returning letterwinners include junior Sam Allison, Mathias Bares, Devin Heitz and Mark Rushlow and sophomores Adam Alexander, David Doud, Casey Harless, Peter Johnson, Andrew Mitchell and Jon Ptashnik. The freshmen class includes nine individuals, adding to a roster of 26 student-athletes.
On the women’s side, Calvin returns 15 letterwinners led by junior Elizabeth Counsell who was named the 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Swimmer and junior Sam Klaasen who was named the 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Diver. Both individuals were All-MIAA selections with Counsell later earning NCAA III All-America honors in the 200 breaststroke.
Counsell and Klaasen are part of four returning All-MIAA selections as juniors Stephanie Fox and Shelby Cloyd also return. In addition, senior Rachel Bos returns after studying overseas during the second semester last year. Bos was a 2010 All-MIAA selection.
Other returning letterwinners include seniors Bridget Scott, Brianna Seaks, juniors Kristen Bjorklund, Rachel Colasurdo and sophomores Samantha Musolf, Margaret Rechel, Elizabeth Schleh, Maria Sedjo, Claire Strunk and Savannah VanWormer.
The freshmen class includes seven individuals to fill out a roster of 22 student-athletes.
