Calvin Lands Record Seven on All-MIAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Team

A record seven members of the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors. Those seven individuals are senior Andrew Mitchell, junior Travis Vincent, sophomores Johnson Cochran, Caleb Meindertsma, Aaron Venema and freshmen Dirk Tanis and Brett Stoughton.
ANDREW MITCHELL - (IRON MOUNTAIN/KINGSFORD HS) - Mitchell is making his second appearance on the All-MIAA team. Last weekend at the MIAA Championships, Mitchell captured the league title in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.74. He also led off Calvin’s MIAA Champion 800 freestyle relay team that clocked an MIAA and school record time of 6:45.68. Mitchell led off the relay with a school record time of 1:40.08 in the 200 freestyle. He also placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (21.07), took third in the 200 backstroke in a school record time of 1:53.64, anchored Calvin’s first place 200 medley relay team (1:32.14) and led off Calvin’s first place 400 medley relay team (3:21.96). Both medley relay teams set new school marks in taking first place.
TRAVIS VINCENT (NOVI/NOVI HS) - Vincent is making his third consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, he took first place in the 200 IM (1:53.64), placed third in the 400 IM (4:07.18) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.74). He was also a part of Calvin’s 400 freestyle relay team that took second (3:01.10).
JOHNSON COCHRAN - (MOUNT VERNON OH/MOUNT VERNON HS) - Cochran is making his second consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships last weekend, he captured titles in the 100 breaststroke (55.73) and 200 breaststroke. His time of 55.67 in the prelims in the 100 breaststroke was a new school record while his winning time of 2:03.19 in the 200 breaststroke was also a new school mark. He also took seventh in the 200 IM (1:56.33) and was a part of Calvin’s MIAA champion 200 and 400 medley relay teams.
CALEB MEINDERTSMA - (ANNANDALE, VA/TRINITY CHRISTIAN HS) - Meindertsma is also making his second consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA team. Meindertsma put together a record-setting weekend at the MIAA Championships last weekend, winning the 400 IM in a school record time of 4:01.45 while also winning the 1,650 freestyle in a school record time of 15:58.55. While swimming the 1,650, he also established a new Calvin record in the 1,000 freestyle, compiling an opening 1,000 split of 9:38.97. In addition, he was second in the 500 freestyle (4:35.59) and swam a leg on Calvin’s first place 800 freestyle relay team.
AARON VENEMA - (GRAND HAVEN/GRAND HAVEN HS) - Venema is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships, he established a school record time of 4:34.00 in winning the 500 freestyle. He also captured first place in the 200 freestyle (1:41.48) and was second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:19.81) while swimming a leg on Calvin’s first place and record setting 800 freestyle relay team. He was also a part of Calvin’s second place 400 freestyle relay team.
DIRK TANIS - (HOLLAND/HOLLAND CHRISTIAN HS - Tanis is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. A diver, he placed fourth on the three-meter board (321.25) and third on the one-meter board (399.40).
BRETT STOUGHTON - (CENTERVILLE, IN/CENTERVILLE HS) - Stoughton is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. At the MIAA Championships, Stoughton was a two-time individual event champion, winning the 100 butterfly (50.15) and 200 butterfly (1:53.70). He was also second in the 200 IM (1:54.48) and was a part of Calvin’s first place 200 and 400 medley relays.
Last weekend, Calvin made school history, winning its first-ever MIAA title in men’s swimming and diving, recording a first place score of 795 points, finishing more than 125 points ahead of second place Hope College.
