Calvin Lands Eight on All-MIAA Men’s Track and Field Team

The All-MIAA men’s track and field team has been announced and eight members of the MIAA champion Calvin men’s track and field squad have received all-conference honors.
Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are seniors David Vande Bunte, Aaron Meckes, Greg Whittle, Matt VanderRoest, junior Sam Kerk, sophomores Erik Holstege and Calvin Kuyers and freshman Jon Cok.
Vande Bunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA track and field team. He claimed the league title in the 10,000 meters (31:17.38) last weekend at the MIAA Field Day.
VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) is making his second appearance on the All-MIAA team. VanderRoest won the 5,000 meters last weekend at the MIAA Field Day with a time of 14:52.63.
Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) is also making his second appearance on the All-MIAA team. Whittle was the league champion last weekend in the 1,500 meters (3:55.50) while placing fourth in the 800 meters (1:56.07).
Meckes (Bay City/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) is making his second appearance on the All-MIAA team. Meckes repeated as league champion in the discus (158-1) while placing third in the shot put (51-8 1/2).
Kerk (Hartland, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. Kerk took second in the 1,500 meters (3:55.60) and was fifth in the 800 meters (1:56.14) at the MIAA Field Day.
Kuyers (Lansing/Lansing Christian HS) is also making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. Kuyers was the league champion last weekend in the 400 meter hurdles (54.31) and placed second in the 110 high hurdles (15.71).
Holstege (Kewsick, Va./Monticello HS) was a multi-threat for the Knights at the MIAA Field Day, winning the 110 high hurdles (15.51), placing third in the long jump (21-4 3/4), sixth in the high jump (6-0) and eighth in the 200 meters (24.26). Holstege is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. His father Chris Holstege was a three-time All-MIAA track and field selection for Calvin from 1985-to-1988 while his uncle Todd Holstege was a two-time All-MIAA selection in football at Hope College from 1981-to-1982.
Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) earned a spot on the All-MIAA team by winning the high jump last weekend with a jump of 6-4 while placing eighth in the long jump (20-7 3/4) and triple jump (41-4 1/4).
The Calvin men’s track and field team captured the outright MIAA title by taking first place at both the MIAA Jamboree and MIAA Field Day this spring. The title was Calvin’s third under fourth-year head coach Bret Otte and the 37th in program history.
