Calvin Knocks Off Trine in Straight Sets

ANGOLA, IN – Coming off of a win against rival Hope College Friday night, the Calvin volleyball team traveled to Hershey Hall to face the Thunder of Trine University Saturday afternoon.  Calvin (13-1, 6-0MIAA) defeated Trine (12-4, 5-2MIAA) in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-22, 25-14.

Calvin was led by senior Lizzie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) with ten kills.  Fellow senior Julia Hilbrands (Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Christian) and freshmen Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) had six kills apiece.  Calvin setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Christian) dished out 25 assists.

Both teams hit poorly.  The Knights had 17 attack errors on the day, while the Thunder had 25.  Calvin, using 14 team blocks, held Trine to a .063 clip.  Calvin hit a mere .183.  Hilbrands and Rietema added nine and six blocks respectively. 

Senior Betsy Irwin (Athens, OH/Alexander) led the Thunder in defeat with nine kills. 

“Today was not our best effort,” Calvin head coach Amber Warners said.  “We were able to gut it out today, but we have lots of stuff to work on.”

Calvin returns to action when it travels to Saint Mary’s Wednesday to take on the Belles.
