Friday, January 29, 2010
The 175th meeting between Calvin and Hope in menís basketball will take place on Saturday, January 30, when the two rivals face each other inside Hopeís DeVos Fieldhouse at 3 p.m.
Hope currently holds a slim 88-86 series lead in a series that began during the 1920-21 season.
Just 92 points separate the teams over 174 games, a difference of only 0.529 points per game!
This will also feature the third meeting of the year between the two teams as Hope edged Calvin 79-76 in the consolation game of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament Thanksgiving weekend with Calvin coming back to defeat Hope 84-75 on January 6 in the MIAA (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) opener for both teams. At 7-0 in league play, Calvin currently holds a two-game lead over Hope (5-2 MIAA) for first place in the MIAA standings.
Both prior games were played at Calvinís Van Noord Arena with the January 6 meeting marking the MIAA opener for both teams.
In the MIAA pre-season coachesí poll, Calvin and Hope were picked as co-favorites with each team receiving four first place votes, marking the first time the two rivals had been picked as co-favorites in the pre-season league poll.
Of special note, the head coaches of both teams on Saturday will be wearing sneakers during the game as part of the NABC “Coaches vs Cancer Suits and Sneakers Weekend” initiative. The program, sponsored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches promotes cancer awareness and cancer research.
