The ACHA D3 Selectsí Program is proud to announce the coaching staff for Division 3ís third bi-annual trip to Europe over Christmas break. Mike Petrusma, head coach of the Calvin College Knights, has been selected as the head coach of the 2014-15 Selectís trip. Mike previously served as an assistant under Sean Weaver during the second Selectís trip in 2012-13 who went 5-0 on their trip. The rest of the coaching staff is still being selected and will be announced soon.
Mike Petrusma is currently in his 18th season at Calvin College and is an active leader in the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference and the ACHA Division 3. His coaching record includes over 360 wins, one national championship (2004) and 3 other 3rd place finishes. Mike has built a consistent program at a Calvin College that regularly qualifies for regionals in the North Region. He was given the coach of the year award in the MCHC in 2006. The MCHC hosted the D3 nationals in Holland, MI in 2011 at which Mike was one of the key league representatives on site. Mike also traveled to the 2013 D3 nationals in Springfield, MO to assist the D3 commissioner on site and even provided some color commentary for a few of the game broadcasts.
Coach Petrusma was born in St. Thomas, Ontario and played hockey in the Georgetown area. Mike began coaching at Grand Rapids Christian after moving to West Michigan. He also spent two seasons coaching at Grand Valley State University before moving over to Calvin College. Coach Petrusma took a break from college hockey to return to Grand Rapids Christian and he led them to two City League titles and one regional championship (the 1st regional championship in school history). Mike eventually returned to coach the Calvin Knights in 2002.
Mike lives in the Grand Rapids area with his wife Kristin. He has two married sons, Josh and his wife Michelle and Michael and his wife Amanda. Mikeís first grandson was born recently to Michael and Amanda and is named Atlas. Coach Petrusma owns his own custom wood finishes shop that keeps him very busy when he is not the rink.
In addition to the coaching staff, the Selectís program has asked Chris Van Timmeren (Hope College/Former Selectís Head Coach), Sean Weaver (Central Florida/Former Selectís Head Coach) and Division 3 Vice-president Scott Solomon to assist with the selection of the team. They will be evaluating players during the 10 team All-Star tournament later this year.
